What could be a better occasion to celebrate than the New Year? The answer is NONE. Many people spend their time hanging out with their love ones, families, lovers, friends or strangers in a crowded place, while I chose to volunteer at Cherntawan International Meditation Center (or Rai Cherntawan ) of Master Vor. Vajiramedhi during 28th Dec – 3rd Jan 2018. It was an immediate decision made when seeing my teacher’s post on Facebook asking for a volunteer. At first, I was like “Ok. I’ve got nothing to do anyway.” So instead of staying at home whining about being free, it would be better to find some activities to join which was my best choice that I made last year. There is a plethora of things I have learnt when being there, and I feel that I would be selfish not sharing those moments to enlighten others as I have been.
The thing that I would like to mention is what I had been told repeatedly throughout my stay at Rai Cherntawan; it is four guiding thoughts for the New Year by Vor. Vajiramedhi that he always told every group of the people visiting which is very helpful to hold onto:
- Be happy by making others happy – in other words, it means that you need to get rid of your selfishness within, and what could be the best way to do so? Giving. It is more than just helping yourselves but others.
- When in trouble, turn those hardships into teachers who guide you through the lessons taught in life. Never feel neglected if the luck is not on your side. Be positive.
- Try to find only goodness in people with no contemp. Master Vor stated that when you see someone doing well or even better than you, you should learn from him how did he do. There are two ways how people response to other’s success; the fool gets jealous, whilst the wise finds motivation.
- Live in the present moment peacefully. Leave the past behind. The best thing is what in front of you; learn to appreciate it. If your best is yet to come, it might not come, but the present is real.
All in all, if we all hold onto these 4 principles in our daily life, we will be happy throughout the year (every year). Furthermore, I would like to end this writing with this quote by Master Vor, “Today only happens once”. Start off a great year with a great attitude like flowers blossoming with good fertilizers.
